More birth pangs of a new Middle East?
As we watch the total destruction of ancient Christian communities -- whole cities -- in Syria and northern Iraq I am reminded of the infamous statement by Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice when Israel attacked Lebanon (again) in 2006:
"What we're seeing here, in a sense, is the growing -- the birth pangs of a new Middle East. And whatever we do, we have to be certain that we are pushing forward to the new Middle East, not going back to the old one."

These lands are the birthplace of Christianity where the Apostles and the other early disciples of Christ preached and spread the Gospel....
